Wilfred Owen - Use of Adjectives
Wildfred Owen uses a build up of adjectives to describe the actions of the dying man in the gas attack. “He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.” The dynamic adjectives give us a clear sense of the movement and show how much this one death has affected Owen as he sees it “in all my dreams.” The trenches are therefore a very dangerous place with life being lost at random. The exact opposite of “dulce et decorum,” as ironically mentioned in the title and final stanza.

Wilfred Owen
P. Another way Wilfred Owen creates strong feelings is by using punctuation unusually.
Q. ‘GAS! Gas! Quick, boys! –‘
E. Owen uses the punctuation to show strong feelings such as panic, worry and being terrified of the attack. In this quote, the first word is in capitals, which shows how it would have been delivered, with a shout. The exclamation marks and the short sharp sentences have the effect of conveying this emotion. By using the exclamation marks we get a sense of the tone and the panic in his voice. The comma after ‘quick’ separates the words and the idea of Owen calling the men ‘boys’ suggests he feels paternal (like a father) towards his men, suggesting his loyalty. The double dash at the end again is used as a separation between the supposed dialogue and the action that follows. Owen does this later on in the final stanza, where he separates the memory from the ‘now’ of the poem.

Anthem for Doomed Youth - Wilfred Owen
Anthem for Doomed Youth
The poem takes the form of a sonnet
Owen doesn’t completely follow the traditional rhyme scheme because…
The poem is about the love of…
P. As well as using a sonnet to convey emotion, Owen also uses emotive language:
Q. “monstrous anger of the guns”
E. Owen creates personification by giving the guns emotions. Here they are angry. This also connects with us on an emotional level. If we saw our comrades gunned down, we might feel…. So when Owen says ‘monstrous anger’ this is also what he is feeling towards the enemy.
P. Another way Owen informs us about life in the trenches is through his emphasis on sound. Living in the trenches must have been incredibly loud.
Q. Owen says “the stuttering rifle’ rapid rattle.’
E. The key sound words here are ‘stuttering’ and ‘rattle.’ These words are emphasised by Owen when he repeats the ‘r’ sounds, the phrase is alliterative. As a reader the effect on us is that the pace is quickened and it leaves an impression on us; we get a sense of the panic and distress that Owen felt in the trenches.

World War 1 Poetry - in English, Turkish and Russian!!
Point: One of the ways Owen explores the conditions of the trenches is his use of description.
Quote: ‘He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.’
Explanation: Here he uses three significant adverbs. They are very negative words to describe the man’s gas poisoning. Owen makes them stand out, by putting them in a list of three and by having them in a stanza of their own. He tells us how he sees the man in his nightmares for days after the event. Owen is clearly effected badly by his experience in the trenches.
